Fort Renovations Have Begun
The Old Fort, a recreation of the Fort that stood here in 1816, was built 50 years ago.
Time and weather have taken their toll, and major repairs are needed.
We are currently working toward raising 1.9 million dollars for repair and renovations on all the Old Fort buildings. This project will proceed in phases. As enough funding is secured for each phase, work will begin. We need your help!
Phase 1: Spy Run Block House: DONE
Through grants and donations, we have raised over $300,000 to fix the Spy Run Blockhouse. Work began in March 2024 and is now completed.
Phase 2: Doctor’s Quarters and Hospital Building
Funding for Phase 2 has been secured. Work on the Doctor’s Quarters and Hospital building began in September 2024. The first step was the removal of the first floor windows and door casings. We are working to salvage and reuse windows, shutters, exterior doors, interior partitions and doors, and all hardware possible as that building is reconstructed. Timbers have been ordered and work on the building structure will begin after they arrive.
Phase 3: What’s next?
Once the Doctor’s Quarters are completed, the Commander’s Building will be next, followed by the Junior Officers Building and finally the Barracks. Work on each phase will begin as funding is secured, both from grants and donations. Historic Fort Wayne, Inc. does not receive any state or federal funding, but relies on generous donations from members of the community. If you would like to help support the Fort reconstruction, you can use the donate button on our website or send a check to P.O. Box 12650, Fort Wayne, IN 46864. All donations are tax deductible.
